Film Lecturer from SAE Perth Opens Lottery West Films at International Arts Festival
16th December 2009
Perth filmmaker and SAE film lecturer Burleigh Smith recently opened the Perth International Arts Festival's Lottery West Films on November 30 with his romantic comedy, "Love Like You've Never Been Hurt". The fifteen-minute film tells the story of problem gamblers who orchestrate a romance between two broken hearts so that they can bet on the outcome.
Smith, who wrote and directed the film, plays Edward, an unhappy accountant who is introduced to an equally troubled Edwina (played by Taryn Leggett). The film was shot by Richard Malins A.C.S. and produced by Mat de Koning.
With a flare for capturing the essence of relationships between men and women and his often emphasis on the dry wit and desperate characters in his films, it is no wonder film critic Mark Naglazas likened Burleigh’s directing style to that of Woody Allen, saying:
"Smith skilfully replicates a Woody Allen movie, right down to the black-and-white credits and the old-time jazz-inflected soundtrack, making for a kooky and charming contrast: the sophisticated New York romantic comedy relocated to a daggy Perth setting that climaxes (cringe) in front of the Bell Tower".
Congratulations Burleigh on the screening and the accolade, and we look forward, with much anticipation, to checking out your debut feature “Gemini” when it’s released in 2011!
